SHEPHERDSVILLE - To support the community and provide case management, Shepherd’s Shelter has been awarded one AmeriCorps member through a competitive application process with the Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky (HHCK).

This member has committed to a year of service in our community. Penny Young, Executive Director of the Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky, Inc., stated that “the Shepherd’s Shelter did an excellent job in describing the need and rationale for an AmeriCorps member in their organization and has outlined a strong commitment to provide the member with a challenging year of growth and community service experience while serving the needs of their clients”.

Historically, AmeriCorps members with HHCK have made a long-term difference in Kentucky.

In the year 2008, site members and the members they recruited and managed contributed over 90,000 hours of service, built 27 homes for low-income families, renovated and weatherized 157 homes, and helped secure housing, services, and resources for over 4,500 Kentuckians.

For seven years, Shepherd’s Shelter has helped Bullitt County to assist homeless and at risk of homelessness individuals and families. Shepherd’s Shelter will use their AmeriCorps member to provide housing stability and case management and expects to provide Bullitt County with supportive services to assist people who are homeless or inadequately housed in securing emergency, transitional or permanent housing, including home ownership opportunities.

The AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

The CNCS provides opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve their communities and country through three programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America.

Together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation is working to build a culture of citizenship, service, and responsibility in America.
