Girls' Bullitt County Middle School Tournament

By Mike Farner

BERNHEIM - Pulling away in the second half, the Eastside Lady Eagles won the 'B' title on Thursday in the Girls Bullitt County Middle School Tournament which was played at Bernheim Middle School.
The title was just the second ever for the Lady Eagles at this level as they beat the Mount Washington Lady Generals 30-14.
The Girls' Middle School Basketball Tournament was sponsored by Schmid Funeral Home as well as The Awards Center and The Pioneer News.
Eastside came into the event as the top seed having gone through the regular season undefeated against Bullitt County competition. Three times previously Eastside had beaten arch-rival Mount Washington.
This time it appeared that the Lady Generals would be able to make a game out of it as they were within 10-7 at halftime. Eastside shot down that hope with a 9-1 run in the third quarter before they rolled to the 16-point victory.
How good is Eastside? After winning the 'B' title, four of the five starters in the first game came back and started in the 'A' game that Eastside also won by beating Mount Washington.
The difference in this game was the third quarter. After struggling with its offense in the first half, Eastside got rolling when Alyssa Peak nailed a three-pointer 90 seconds into the second half. After Mount Washington got a free throw from Selena Spalding, Eastside would score the next 12 points. Lindsey Duvall got the ball rolling with a short jumper and then after stealing an inbounds pass, scored again to add to the momentum.
Mount Washington did not score again until 2:45 remained in the game and the Lady Generals did not score a basket in the second half until Amy Gentry scored with two minutes remaining in the game.
As they would do in the 'A' game later, Peak and Duvall led Eastside in scoring. Peak finished with nine points while Duvall tossed in eight points.
Mount Washington got five points from seventh-grader Selena Spalding as well as five points from sixth-grader Kathleen Scott.
Eastside had the number one seed for the 'B' tournament and thus capped off a strong season with the win. The team was coached by Albert Thompson and Brandon Fentress who are the assistant 'A' coaches to Samantha Downs.
Mount Washington lost just five games (with 18 wins) this season and four of the losses were to Eastside. The only other loss was to Crosby Middle School. The Lady Generals are coached by Jen Beichler and Chris Williams who serve as the assistant coaches to 'A' team head coach Christal Scott.
