SHEPHERDSVILLE – One week, one game

The last diamond team scheduled to start play this spring, the Bullitt Central softball team got in one game last week before cold weather shut things down again.

Playing at Ballard on Tuesday, the Lady Cougars could not muster a hut, but they did play well against one of the best teams on the Seventh Region before falling 5-0. A day later, Ballard handed Bullitt East its only loss of the season 7-5.

This game was only 1-0 before the Lady Bruins scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning. The one early run was scored in the second inning.

Bullitt Central junior Hailey Szpila pitched a strong game as she allowed only seven hits. The one early run was unearned and then only two of the runs in the sixth were earned.

Unfortunately, Bullitt Central could not get a hit off Ballard ‘ace’ Jessica Adell, one of the top pitchers in the area.

Still, in the top of the seventh, Bullitt Central got two runners on base, but could not dent the plate.

“If it had been a 1-0 or 2-0 game there in the seventh inning it would have been different,” Bullitt Central head coach Buddy Gallemore said. “We weren’t watching pitches. We were swinging, but she just kept us off balance.”

It was the first game of the season for the maroon and gray as well as for Ballard.

“We aren’t used to seeing that type of pitching yet,” Gallemore said.

Bullitt Central had a game scheduled on Thursday when Central Hardin but it was postponed because of bad weather. The teams could play on Wednesday of this week, weather permitting. With rain early in the week, the Lady Cougars are just hoping to get to play a home game on Thursday against Spencer County and then a road game to Pleasure Ridge Park on Friday.

The Lady Cougars are not scheduled to play the following week over spring break.
