Baseball All-Stars this week; BE girls part of LIT tourney

-A A +A

Around Bullitt County...

By Mike Farner

SHEPHERDSVILLE - A week after being rained out, the Sixth/Seventh Baseball All-Star games are being played this week.

Originally, the juniors were playing on Monday night while the seniors were going to play a doubleheader on Tuesday. Neither one of those nights were dry enough last week.

Now, the juniors played last night at Pleasure Ridge Park High School while the seniors will play tonight at Panther Field.

All three Bullitt County baseball programs were represented in the games.

In today’s Senior All-Star game, Bullitt East standouts Zach McCarthy and Jimmy Hoffman will be playing for the Sixth Region team. Those two will be joined by North Bullitt’s trio of Tyler Estep, Carter Sibley and Matt Wagner as well as Bullitt Central’s Matt Craven.

Joining that group in the games will be DeSales’ Jay Barnett who is from Bullitt County, living in the north end.

The Sixth Region team was coached by Greg Lauder of Butler.

Games will be played tonight at 5 and 7:30 p.m.

The Junior All-Stars played one game last night.

Heading the local contingent in that game was Bullitt East’s Brandon Alphin, the Sixth Region Player of the Year this past season. He was joined by teammates Matt Bowles and Josh Whitmer on the Sixth Region roster. Also on the Sixth Region team was Bullitt Central Travis Stepp.

North Bullitt had just four juniors on its roster this season and that group saw very little playing time and none were selected for this All-Star game.

The Junior Sixth Region All-Stars were coached by T.J. Graves of Desales.

Lady Chargers in LIT

Bullitt East Lady Charger head coach Chris Stallings said last week that while his program was not invited to play in the Girls’ Louisville Invitational Tournament last season, the red and gold have been invited to participate in the LIT in each of the next two seasons.

Stallings had been waiting on word back in the spring about his team being invited to the event as one of the four at-large teams from out in the state. Bullitt East has never been a part of the Jefferson County group of teams that get invited based on their computer rankings even though the Lady Chargers play in the Sixth Region with other Louisville teams and have for the past four years.

But the Girls’ LIT committee (which is different from the Boys’ LIT committee) came back with a different offer - Bullitt East could be made a part of the Jefferson County contingent. Stallings accepted for arrangement for the next two years.

This past season, both Bullitt East and Bullitt Central had computer numbers good enough to make the field for the Girls LIT, but were not part of the group of teams eligible to contend for an invitation.

As it turned out, that wasn’t the end of the world as the Girls’ LIT was cancelled due to bad weather.

With a team expected to be ranked among the top-10 in the state next winter and the pre-season favorite in the Sixth Region, Stallings was hoping to get an invitation as one of the four teams invited from outside Jefferson County, something Bullitt East has done three other times including in 1995 when the Allison Bass led team won the LIT title. The Girls’ LIT committee instead came back with the alternate offer.

Now, both of the Bullitt East programs will be eligible to compete in the LIT tournaments based on their computer rankings after the first five or six weeks of the regular season. The girls’ arrangement will be for at least the next two seasons.

Neither North Bullitt nor Bullitt Central is part of this agreement and will not be playing in the LIT. Those programs have already scheduled games for those weeks.
