LOUISVILLE - Bullitt Central’s rebuilt and reconfigured track program had its first final test on Saturday at the Class AAA, Region 3 Track and Field Championships at Male High School.
In the end, it was a promising start for the Cougars and Lady Cougars despite the fact that they used 16 freshmen to compete against some of the top track programs in the state.
The highlight of the day for the maroon and gray came early in the day as freshman Kasey Renfrow won the girls’ long jump with an effort of 15-03.5, barely edging another freshman, Male’s Shaelyn Waller, who had a leap of 15-03.25.
Bullitt Central junior Mara Judd made it to the finals of the long jump and finished seventh at 14-feet.
Renfrow’s victory was the first regional track title for a Bullitt Central athlete, outside of the high jump, in this century. Renfrow is now qualified for the Class AAA State Track and Field Championships which will be contested at the University of Louisville on Saturday.
Renfrow’s winning jump came in the first round and then carried over to the final three jumps. Later in the day, Renfrow finished third in the 300-meter hurdles (50.10), fourth in the triple jump at 30-02 and she was also sixth in the 200-meter dash (28.96).
The top six finishers in each event earned team points. Bullitt Central finished with 33 team points to finish sixth out of nine teams. Renfrow scored 21 of those 33 points.
“She had a busy schedule today and the long jump was her first event,” Bullitt Central girls’ track coach Thomas Martin said. “Her legs were fresh. She was well off of her best, but it was still good.”
Renfrow was .04 seconds from qualifying for the state meet in the hurdles so she will compete only in the long jump on Saturday.
Bullitt Central also picked up four team points from the 3,200-meter relay team (Emily McKnight, Lauren Redding, Alyssa Shifflett and Cindy Kiefer) that finished fourth in the first event of the day. That relay just missed qualifing for the state meet by less than a second. Kiefer, who recently signed to run at Bellarmine University, scored two points with a fifth place finish in the 800-meter run.
Other team points came from Judd who was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles while the 400-meter relay team was fifth (Taylor Boston, Hannah Huff, Judd, Kenzie Miller and Lauren Redding). The Lady Cougars also picked up a fifth place finish from the 1,600-meter relay team (McKnight, Redding, Shifflett and Kiefer). and the 800-meter relay team (Boston, Huff, McKnight and Miller) was sixth.
Two Boys to State
Bullitt Central collected only 12 points in the boys’ meet, but did advance two athletes to the state meet.
Cougar freshman Trevor Carnell ran another strong 400-meter dash and finished fourth with a time of 51.84. That time was good enough to advance him to the state finals in his first year of high school track.
In addition, Bullitt Central senior Hunter Campbell had one of his best days of the season, finishing fourth in the discus with a throw of 119-05. That effort was just good enough to qualify him for the state meet.
Coach Mike Gossett’s team also scored team points in three other events. Senior Roderick Hahn was sixth in the high jump at 5-8 while two relay teams scored points. The 400-meter relay team (Cody Fulkerson, Michael Saunders, Brandon Krebs and Joseph Greenwell) was fifth in 47.26 while the 800-meter relay team (Fulkerson, Carnell, Krebs and Greenwell) was sixth in 1:36.73.
