SHEPHERDSVILLE - The Bullitt Central bowling program picked up its first major title in the first season as a sponsored sport by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association when the Cougars grabbed the big trophy at the Pleasure Ridge Park Invitational.
Competing at Dixie Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 7, it was a full day of bowling as 11 teams battled for the title. First, each team bowled with two four-man teams with the low score being dropped. Those scores seeded the teams for the double-elimination tournament using the Baker scoring system with it being the best two out of three each time.
Bullitt Central came out of the early part of the bowling with the number one seed and had a first round bye. The Cougars then rolled through the winner's bracket undefeated, beating Campbell County White, Pleasure Ridge Park 'A' and then Manual Red in the winner's bracket final.
The Cougars then got to take a break as Campbell County Purple, the defending state champions (before it was a KHSAA sport) beat Maunal Red in the loser's bracket final. Campbell County Purple then beat Bullitt Central before the Cougars came back to win the title in the second match.
Bullitt Central had competed against Campbell County Purple earlier in the season conducted by St. Xavier and lost to them by 80 pins.
"Having the chance to come up against them again and beat the state champs was great. It was a great day for BC bowling," Bullitt Central head coach Benita McBride said. "I am very proud of the team. They never gave up.
"This is our ninth year as a bowling team," the coach added. "We have worked hard to become a team of skill and of team work. We win as a team and lose as a team. It takes all of us to get there."
Bullitt Central's boys' program has four seniors - Michael McBride, Mike Bloom, Aaron Bryant and Tim Shirley. The other team members are Jareth Howerton, Matthew Seay, Jared Borah, Ridge May, Joshua Puher and James Stotman.
The Bullitt Central Lady Cougars will compete this coming weekend in the same event for girls.
