FRANKFORT - The Girls’ Eighth Region Tennis Tournament was a little shorter than Bullitt East head coach Britney Orme and top singles player Makaela Knight had hoped.

Knight, who had advanced to the Kentucky State Tennis Tournament last season and had gone undefeated against Eighth Region foes this season was shocked in the event’s quarter-finals when she lost 6-4, 6-4 to Anderson County’s Kristen Hamrick, a player she had beaten easily during the regular season. Hamrick came into the event with the number seven-seed.

Knight did collect two team points as she got an opening round bye and then won her second round match to reach the quarter-finals.

Picking up the scoring loss for Bullitt East was the top doubles team of juniors Allison Murphy and Kaylan Ware. The team came into the event with the number eight seed, but upset the Oldham County third-seeded team of Roberts and Guest 6-2, 6-0. The team advanced to the semi-finals where they were beaten by the top-seeded North Oldham team 6-0, 6-1.

Because of the team scores and the four spots up for grabs to advance to the state tournament, Ware and Murphy had to come back and face the other team that lost in the semi-finals. That was the second-seeded team of Tolsdorf and Townsend of Southern Oldham and they defeated the Bullitt East pair 6-3, 6-1.

Bullitt East also picked up a point from its number two doubles team of Gardiera and Nidiffer who won a first round match before losing in the round of 16.

North Bullitt grabbed two team points in the meet with a pair of first round victories. The Lady Eagles’ number one doubles team of Kottak and Mulliniks beat a team from Carroll County 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in the first round before falling to the fifth-seeded team in the next round.

The Lady Eagles also got a win from singles player Brittany Swallows who defeated Bullitt Central’s Morgan Bozarth 6-1, 6-2. Swallows then lost in the second round to the eighth-seeded player.

Bullitt Central got one team point as the doubles team of Reesor and Pollard defeated a team from Trimble County.
