Bug Fest, plant sale comes to Bernheim Saturday

 CLERMONT -- Bernheim has something for everyone on Saturday, September 17.  Kids of all ages will be enthralled with creative entomology at BugFest; mom, dad and friends will find great plants for the landscape at the Fall Plant Sale and gardeners will learn how to deal with invasive species in the yard at the Smart Gardens and Landscapes program:

Bring the kids on a INSECT SAFARI in Bernheim’s big backyard! Dance the Buggy Boogie, taste the tempting Cricket Crunch, count the Pickled Ticks plus a whole host of other “horrible” delights at BugFest from 11am – 4pm on Saturday, September 17.  The whole family will enjoy the creepies, the crawlies, the music, games and fun.  Opportunities to create and wear costumes; sing along to great bug songs (who knew there were so many?); meet Annabelle the Amiable Ant and much more. Plan to shop for your garden as well at Bernheim’s Fall Plant Sale, also on this day.

Bernheim’s annual Fall Plant Sale features Bernheim Select™, a distinctive variety of plants propagated from Bernheim’s own collections, along with a varied selection of other unique trees, shrubs, grasses and perennial herbaceous plants. All plants are suitable for north central Kentucky growing. Quantities are limited.  A list of available plants will be at  soon.  While you are at Bernheim, expand your knowledge of invasive species at today’s Smart Gardens and Landscapes program (register in advance).  Better yet, bring the whole family and enjoy BugFest, also on this day.

Transform your yard, urban space, rooftop and street side into green spaces that are attractive, food-producing and beneficial to people’s lives and the environment. Bernheim shows you how to plan and prepare your garden as you learn about plants, soil, ecology, insects, wildlife and much more.

September is a great month to control invasive plants in your landscape. Learn about non-native, invasive plants and how they are impacting our urban and native landscapes, and learn how to identify and control invasive plants in your home landscape.

 Workshops take place at Bernheim’s Research Center from 10:00 a.m. – noon and are $10.00 for Bernheim members and $15.00 for non-members.  Registration and payment are required by 4:00 p.m. on the day prior to the program; call (502) 955-8512.  Come early or stay late and enjoy BugFest and purchase great Bernheim Select™ plants at the Fall Plant Sale.

The Smart Gardens and Landscapes monthly programs focus on a different gardening theme each quarter.  Stay updated with your forest echo, Bernheim enews,  and  for information on upcoming opportunities.

Bernheim is only 20 minutes from the Louisville airport at exit 112 on I-65.  Turn east on HWY 245 and the entrance is one mile on the right.

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is at Exit #112 off Highway I-65 South.

BugFest and the Fall Plant Sale are located at the Visitor Center.

Bernheim’s gate is open every day 7 a.m. until sunset, except December 25 and January 1.  Admission to the park is always free for members and free for all every weekday.  Weekends and holidays have a $5 environmental impact fee per vehicle for the public.  Schools and tour groups are welcome, please call in advance for fees and scheduling.  The Visitor Center and Gift Shop are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, including weekends.  Isaac’s Café, open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, is located in the Visitor Center with seasonal lunch items and delicious desserts.  Nature classes and group hiking opportunities are available, current offerings are online at .  Bernheim is located in Clermont, KY.  From I-65, take exit 112 and follow the signs.  The entrance is approximately one mile from the interstate.  Bernheim is a non-profit organization that relies on memberships, grants and donations for support.
