SHEPHERDSVILLE - A quick start on Friday against visiting Atherton was just what the Bullitt Central Cougars ordered as they turned back the Rebels 67-49.

The game was pretty much decided in the first quarter as Bullitt Central raced out to a 23-6 lead and never looked back. The Rebels never got closer than 14 points in the second half.

“We did a really good job of getting started,” Bullitt Central head coach Joe Pat Lee said a few days later. “We had a lot of intensity at the start.

“We lost our focus a little later in the game, but we’re not used to leading by that type score,” the coach added.

Bullitt Central had a good game despite connecting on just four three-pointers.

“Atherton didn’t allow us a lot of threes,” Lee pointed out. “We did a good job getting to the basket. We didn’t really shoot a lot of threes. There weren’t a lot of opportunities.”

Junior Caleb Craddock led the Cougars with 18 points and the team also got a season-high 13 points from Corey Smith who also had seven rebounds. The maroon and gray were also helped along by 12 points from Damon Shepherd and 10 from Miciah Ocasio.

The win moved Bullitt Central to 8-6 and snapped a two-game losing streak.

High-flying Lady Cougars

In the first game on Friday, the Lady Cougars completed one of the highest scoring weeks in school history as they rolled past Atherton 85-55. Just three nights earlier coach Bryan Bates team had scored 89 points in a win over Fairdale.

“Atherton I thought was better than some of their scores indicated,” Bates said a few days later. “They have some kids who can play. They gave us all we wanted.”

The team continues to get balanced scoring as five players scored between 11 and 13 points. Senior Keoka Hilliard and junior Seaera Minyard led the way with 13 points each while Kaitlyn McKnight tallied 12 while both Ashleigh Pollard and Kristen Collins netted 11 points.
