PIONEER VILLAGE - Do you remember in being offered home economics or shop in high school?
Amber Vaughn, the owner of the new fabric shop “A’s Sewing Just for You” wants to teach people how to sew because she believes it is a vanishing art.
“I don’t know anyone that takes these classes in school anymore,” Vaughn said. “I remember them when I was school but the younger generation isn’t exposed to them.”
Vaughn opened up her store on Feb. 9 but the official grand opening wasn’t until March 16.
While she was the setting up the store, she remember all the times her grandmother taught her how to sew.
“I was around seven or eight when she showed me how to use the pedal machine,” Vaughn said. “When I turned 10, I learned how to use the electronic machine. Ever since I have always wanted my own fabric store. I want to teach everything my grandmother taught me to others, especially the younger generation.”
Unlike other larger operations, Vaughn said she is glad her store is small.
“This is a one owner shop,” Vaughn said. “I want to get to know my customers on a personal level. I don’t want them to feel like they are just another customer checking out in line. I want them to know me, so I can learn how to help them. I want to feel comfortable so they can come to me for their sewing needs.”
At her store, Vaughn said she does offer sewing classes for her customers. She said she wants the customers to feel free to take classes to learn more about fabric.
“Not only do I offer sewing classes but my customers can also rent sewing machines,” Vaughn said. “When they rent them, they can only use them in the store. I charge five dollars an hour to rent. “
Most of the sewing classes are $10 but these charges may change depending on the class. Just in case customers want to learn how to embroider or make a quilt.”
Vaughn said she has a list each month available in the store. Along on the store’s Facebook page. She always sends out the sewing class schedule to customers who provide their email.
On her days off, she said she takes care of her mother and mother-in-law. She always takes time to look at new fabrics for any new sewing projects she has in mind.
“My life revolves around two things: my mother and sewing,” Vaughn said.
