MOUNT WASHINGTON - Keeping up with a family and a full-time job, Jennifer Carter stays very busy.

Despite her hectic schedule, Carter managed to fulfill her dream of opening her own business when she and husband Carl recently opened the Busy Lady Quilt Shop on Old Bardstown Road.

“I’ve always wanted to open my own business,” she said. “When we decided to open the shop it was one of those, ‘just go for it’ moments.”

One of the things that prompted Carter to open her business in Mount Washington was the location.

Carter fell in love with the nineteenth century building, which was formerly occupied by Sunsational Tanning Salon.

“I thought it was the perfect location for a quilt shop,” she said.

Carter, who first learned to sew when she was a small child, said quilting has been a favorite pastime for years and she’s thrilled have the opportunity to share her passion with the community.

“I thought Mount Washington needed something like this,” she said.

Carter didn’t know what to expect when she opened, but she found there are many quilters in Mount Washington.

“Quilting is not just for old ladies,” she said laughing. “It’s good to see there are so many quilters out there.”

The folks of Busy Lady offer a variety of services, including quilting classes, a Block of the Month club and longarm quilting for those who need to finish their quilts.

Busy Lady also boasts a large selection of affordable fabrics and sewing supplies.

Perhaps Busy Lady’s most unique service is making memory quilts.

Memory quilts are made of fabrics with sentimental value, whether they be vacation t-shirts, cherished childhood blankets, tattered clothes you have no use for, but can’t part with, whatever.

“They make unforgettable gifts and keepsakes,” Carter said.

While other quilt shops close when most people are just getting off work, Busy Lady stays open until 7 most nights of the week, offering free tips and small rooms for quilters to work in peace.

“I want to help encourage people to quilt and give them the tools they need,” Carter said.

Carter, a Mount Washington native, doesn’t have much spare time with work, but when she does get some time off she enjoys spending time with her family and serving as co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 625.

Carter wished to thank the Mount Washington Quilting Bees quilting club for their support and for helping get the word out about her business.

The Busy Lady Quilt Shop is located at 144 N. Bardstown Road and is open Wednesdays through Fridays 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., Saturdays  10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sundays noon until 5 p.m.

Parking is available in the rear.
