SHEPHERDSVILLE - When you have one of the top basketball teams in the state, if not the country, lots of teams want you on the schedule.
Just ask Bullitt East head coach Troy Barr. His Chargers, led by University of Kentucky signee Derek Willis and Bellarmine University signee Rusty Troutman, a pair of contenders for Mr. Basketball honors this season, are a major drawing card.
Barr could have had his pick of opponents this winter. As it turned out, the Chargers have scrimmaged in far eastern Kentucky, will have games in the central part of the state as well as games in far western Kentucky in addition to the normal slate of tough games in the area. Plus, the Chargers will play games in both Texas and Missouri between now and district tournament time.
That is all well and good for the Chargers, but it does present one problem for their fans. This winter, Bullitt East will play just seven games in Mount Washington and one of those has already been played. One slight positive in that count is that you an add short trips for the Chargers to play at both North Bullitt and Bullitt Central this winter.
The Bullitt East Lady Chargers also play just seven ‘regular’ games at home this season, but in addition to that the team will play four home games just before Christmas in its holiday tournament. Plus, the Lady Chargers will play their two county rivals on short trips as well as playing at Bullitt Central on Dec. 15 in the Bullitt County Challenge.
In a normal season, Bullitt East would have a good number of girl/boy doubleheaders at home. This winter there are just two, and only one of those is on a Friday night (Feb. 12 against Bullitt Central). The other is on Tuesday of this week when Butler brings both of its teams to Mount Washington for a pair of rematches of contests played in the Sixth Region semi-finals last March.
In addition, for almost 30 years, there were six Friday night Bullitt County doubleheaders between East, Central and North each season. If you take out the Fridays during the holidays that meant that roughly half the Friday nights during a season had an intra-county showdown.
This winter there are just four of those and only three of those are on a Friday night.
As they have since 1976, Bullitt Central and North Bullitt will play each other home-and-away with the first coming this Friday in Shepherdsville. The rematch will be at North Bullitt on Jan. 11.
The third Friday intra-county showdown will come on Feb. 8 when Bullitt East travels to North Bullitt. As started last season, that Feb. 8 meeting will be the only regular season contest between North and East after the schools were put into different districts.
This year, Central and East will play twice, but none of the games will be on a Friday night. Bullitt Central asked to split their home game with the boys’ contest on Jan. 7 and the girls’ game on Jan. 17.
East and Central will play a girl/boy doubleheader when they collide in Mount Washington on Feb. 12, but that is a Tuesday.
So, local fans will have to catch ‘em when they can when it comes to seeing some of their favorite teams this winter.
