SHELBYVILLE - Even a Rolls Royce drops a transmission every once in a while.

That was the situation for the Bullitt East Chargers on Friday as they went on the road and played flat, suffering a 55-49 loss to Martha Layne Collins High School.

The loss was the fourth this season for the Chargers, but it was the first loss to a Kentucky team not ranked in the top-10.

“It was probably our worst game of the season in not executing the game plan and the kids playing poorly,” Bullitt East head coach Troy Barr said a few days later.

“It was a game where we never had five guys on the floor on the same page,” the coach added. “When you play a good team at their place and do those things, you lose.”

Most of the problems for Bullitt East came on the offensive end. Barr had no complaints about his defense giving up 55 points. The Chargers are one of the top ten scoring defense teams in the state this season.

The problem was in putting the ball in the basket. The Chargers missed some good shots early and then started pressing. For the game, the red and gold shot 29 percent from the field and only converted half of their free throws.

“We had two threes go in and out in the first quarter,” Barr recalled. “Then we missed five free throws in the first quarter. Give us those shots and four free throws and it’s a different game. Instead of hunkering down, we pushed a little and it snowballed.”

The Chargers still led 10-6 at the first stop but then fell behind 26-23 at halftime. Collins pushed the margin to six points entering the fourth quarter and never relinquished that lead.

Bullitt East did get 18 points from Derek Willis and 12 from Rusty Troutman.

Collins (15-8) did not hit a three-pointer in the game, but did get 20 points and 13 rebounds from Brian Stone.

Bullitt East had a district game earlier this week against Fern Creek and the Chargers will not play on Friday. The team was scheduled to play at Ballard on Saturday, but that game will not be played. Bullitt East and Ballard have already split two games this season and neither coach saw a reason for a third meeting, especially with the possibility of another meeting in the first round of the state tournament also in play.

Instead, Bullitt East will play at Manual on Saturday at either 6 or 7:30 p.m. As of press time on Tuesday, it had not been decided if that would be a JV/varsity doubleheader or of it would be a part of doubleheader that would also include Ballard and Dixie Heights. Fans can check on the KHSAA website (www.khsaa.org) or call the school later in the week for an exact game time.
