SHEPHERDSVILLE - The Bullitt Central Cougars continued to try and find their offense on Tuesday, but it wasn’t to be as the Cougars dropped a key 24th District contest to Southern 57-45.

The maroon and gray did a lot of good things against the Trojans, but scoring was not one of those things. Bullitt Central made just 17 of 54 shots while converting just half of their 12 shots at the free throw line.

“That won’t win many games,” Cougar head coach Joe Pat Lee lamented after the game.

“We’re far from playing good basketball right now,” the coach added. “The frustrating part is that we’re not playing well, but we still have chances to win. We just aren’t making any plays.”

Before the season began, Lee knew said that his team would have play well every night just to be competitive against most teams on the schedule.

“We have to execute every night out and right now we’re not doing that,” Lee said.

Bullitt Central led 7-6 early in the game, but then trailed 20-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Cougars then battled back to within 22-19 only to fall back behind 33-24 by halftime.

The story was much the same in the second half as Bullitt Central would work hard to narrow the gap and then ball back again. The Cougars second seven of the first eight points of the third quarter to get within 34-31, but then Southern led 43-34 entering the fourth quarter.

Twice early in the fourth quarter the Cougars got back within eight points, but they could get no closer.

Bullitt Central got 15 points from senior Travis Stepp and the other senior in the program, Jordan Peercy, finished with 10 points. The Cougars also got eight rebounds from John Sullivan.

Southern was led by Alm Almanza with 15 points while Chris Richard collected 13 points.

This is the only regular season meeting between the 24th District rivals this season. This is the game that will be used in the standings for the seeding of the post-season tournament which will be played at Southern High School in late February.
