CLERMONT - It’s not every day you can launch a pumpkin into the air, work your way through a hay maze, and check out the beautiful natural autumn colors.

At least not along with food vendors, live music, and educational programs.

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest provides all that and more during its annual ColorFest celebration, scheduled this year for Oct. 21 and 22.

Amy Landon, Bernheim manager of communications and marketing, said the fall colors should be arriving just in time this year for plenty of scenic views during the event.

This year some new activities will be available for the kids, including a giant corn pit.

“It’s like being inside a sand box, but it’s all filled with corn,” Landon said.

Kids can also make their way down a new giant slide this year. A view from the top may help them determine the best ways to make it through the hay maze.

Other popular kids activities include the pumpkin roll, face painting, nature games, and the popular mudpie kitchen, complete with all the natural ingredients.

The pumpkin launch also returns this year, with patrons using both muscle and scientific thought to determine how far they can shoot pumpkins across a field, or to aim at some designated targets.

The pumpkins are available at a cost of $2 each for smaller pumpkins, $3 for larger pumpkins, or two large pumpkins for $5.

Bernheim will again provide hayrides for patrons, also for a nominal fee. Landon suggested signing up early for the hayrides, as they tend to fill up quickly.

The event includes various educational exhibits provided by Bernheim and hosted by many of the park’s forest rangers and employees. Mixed in with the educational booths are local craft artists displaying and selling their creations.

A collection of food trucks will provide nourishment near the visitor center, with Isaac’s Cafe also available inside. Landon said Isaac’s will also host an outdoor grill.

Other food vendors will include Fresh Out of the Box, Gary’s Italian Shaved Ice, Graeter’s Ice Cream, Kona Ice, Lexie Lu’s, Piggin’ Out Funnel Cakes, Real Deal BBQ, Smok’N Cantina, and TNT Deep Fried Deliciousness.

While your outside, be sure to enjoy the musical artists that will be featured during the event. Among the artists performing this year are Casey Hammett, Cull Hollow, and the Juggerloos.

This year’s ColorFest will also include a difference in admission cost, though the event is still free for Bernheim members. Others will pay a $10 environmental impact fee per carload to enter.

The 2017 ColorFest takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. For more information visit www.berheim.org or call (502)955-8512.

The event is also sponsored by Beam Suntory, First Harrison Bank, Kindred Healthcare, PBI Bank, Shepherdsville/Bullitt County Tourist and Convention Commission, and Stock Yards Bank and Trust.
