HEBRON ESTATES - The North Bullitt Eagles will get their shot at playing in the Louisville Invitational Tournament this week when they take on Trinity at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Bellarmine University’s Knights’ Hall.
This will be the first trip for the green and gold to the prestigious tournament. The Eagles were invited through a deal worked out with the Boys’ LIT committee that will have one Bullitt County team take part in the tournament each season. Bullitt East played last year, losing to Manual in the first round. Bullitt Central will fill a spot next season.
Bullitt East also played in the tournament in 2005.
The Bullitt County slot is taking up one of the four ‘at-large’ berths reserved for teams outside of Jefferson County. North Bullitt (3-11 after beating Spencer County on Thursday and losing to Fern Creek on Friday) is not taking a spot away from a Jefferson County team and the Eagles did not get invited based on any of the computer rankings used to seed the event. In fact, the Eagles are the lowest ranked team in the field.
As of Saturday, Trinity had one of the best records in the tournament with a 13-2 mark. The Shamrocks won their first nine games this season including the championship of the Bearno’s Holiday Classic at Bethlehem, an event in which North Bullitt also played. After a loss to Clark County in a holiday tournament at Lexington Catholic, Trinity won four more games before losing to Ballard on Friday.
The only team the two squads have in common is Southern. Trinity beat the Trojans 46-40 in the first game of the Bearno’s Holiday Classic while North Bullitt has lost to Southern twice this season, 62-48 in the regular season and 57-49 in the Bearno’s event.
This is a one-and-done tournament for all the teams so North Bullitt is guaranteed just one game. With a first round victory, North Bullitt would advance to the quarter-finals which will be played on Friday.
The semi-finals and finals are set for Saturday.
However, if the Eagles pull the upset of Trinity, then it will cause some major rescheduling for the Eagles later in the week. At this point, North Bullitt is scheduled to host Bullitt Central on Friday and then is set to play in the Outback Steakhouse 5th/6th Region Challenge at Bullitt East on Saturday.
