BARDSTOWN - It would be some consolation but it least the Bullitt East Lady Charger soccer team got to fight for another day.
With its 1-0 victory over North Bullitt in the District 9 soccer tournament in Nelson County, Bullitt East had the challenge to face the top-seeded Bethlehem squad in the semifinals Monday night.
On Sunday, the local teams had to switch to an elementary school facility due to heavy rains making the Nelson County football field unplayable.
It was an evenly-played contest as both teams had numerous attempts on goal.
However, midway in the second half, Bullitt East’s Katie Lancaster got the lone goal. The freshman’s kick found the upper part of the Eagle goal past keeper Taylor Heltsley.
Up until the final minute, North Bullitt had opportunities to tie the score but keeper Katie Stewart made one final save.
The tight contest was a repeat of the regular season meeting that ended in a 1-1 tie at North Bullitt.
Bullitt East advanced with a 13-4-1 overall record, the second best record in the Fifth Region. North Bullitt’s season ended with a 3-13-4 mark.
In the other game, played on the Nelson County soccer field, Bullitt Central was shut out 10-0 by Bardstown.
In the boys’ competition at Bullitt East, the host team defeated North Bullitt 3-0 to set up the showdown with Nelson County on Tuesday.
Bullitt Central lost to the host Nelson County 10-0.
Bullitt East and Nelson County have met in the semi-finals in each of the past three seasons. The Chargers won tight games in both 2006 and 2007 before losing to the Cardinals last season. Nelson beat Bullitt East 2-1 in the regular season, but it is Bullitt East that is ranked 24th in the state.
The upper bracket semi-finals include Bardstown taking on Bethlehem. Bethlehem is the 8th-ranked team in the state.
Both semi-finals were to be played at Bullitt East on Tuesday. The two winners were to meet in the championship game at 7 p.m. on Thursday on the Bullitt East football field.
Both teams in the championship game will advance to next week’s Fifth Region Tournament.
