Eastside repeats as state champs for medium division

-A A +A

RICHMOND - For the second consecutive year, the Eastside Middle cheerleading squad came back to Bullitt County in possession of the KAPOS Kentucky State Cheerleading championship trophy.

According to cheer coach Carrie DeBold, in order to compete at the state competition at Eastern Kentucky University, the squad had to win its regional contest.

For Eastside, both the Medium (16 members) and the Super Large (24 members) squads won their regional events and qualified for the state.

The Super Large squad placed sixth in the state.

The Medium team won for the second straight year, the only middle school squad to accomplish this feat.

DeBold said it was a huge accomplishment to repeat. Twelve members of last year’s squad graduated and moved on to high school which left the current team as a very young squad.

Both teams worked very hard throughout the year, according to DeBold, on their individual tumbling skills and stunting skills.

She thanked Andre Lyons and Nicole Smith with Awesome Cheer Elite for their assistance in preparing the team for competition.

The next competition will be a trip to the Nationals and Worlds on Feb. 7-9 at Disney World in Orlando. Last year, the Medium squad finished second by less than a point and the Super Large squad placed ninth.

Medium team members included: eighth graders Courtney Barnes, Erika Bolton, Jewel Deeley, Ethan Smith and Mallory Tinker; seventh graders Skylar Baker, Cassidy Burroughs, Hannah Clark, Leah Glass, Haylee Miles, Taylor Ramsey, Maddie Saylor, Alissa Scott and Kaylie Zabel; and sixth graders Savanna Bynum and Shelby Knieriem.

Coaches were Carrie DeBold, Kristal Stillwell, Andre Lyons, Nicole Smith and Jay Kirk.
