Eastside's Douthett earns Beacon teaching honor

MOUNT WASHINGTON – Eastside Middle School collaboration teacher Sonia Douthett will be presented a 2008 Beacon of Hope award for Excellence in Education during ceremonies Nov. 20 at Masterson’s Restaurant in Louisville.

The award is for a teacher or school administrator who has shown creative ways to address the unique learning styles of their students and lead them toward a path to success.

Honors also include Celebration of Ability Award for youth and adult, Volunteer award and Making a Difference award and are presented by the Learning Disabilities Association of Kentucky, Inc.

Douthett expressed surprise upon learning a colleague had nominated her.

“I was stunned because there are so many quality teachers and administrators that I feel are deserving of this award,” she said.

This is Douthett’s 17th year in education. She spent 12 years at Mount Washington Middle School before moving to Eastside when the facility opened four years ago. Her career started in Rockcastle County.

She works in collaboration and co-teaches with four teachers who include; Language Arts teacher Susan Carlisle, math is with Missy Wood, science with Kelly Cleavinger and social studies with Kevin Vachon. Their team name is The Crazy Eights and they focus on making learning fun and engaging for their students.

Bullitt County Public Schools has nearly 13,000 students in grades preschool through 12. Over 800 certified and classified employees devote each school day to make the district the leader in educational excellence.
