LOUISVILLE - Saturday night’s Kentucky High School Coaches Association East/West Junior All-Star Basketball Game at St. Xavier had a Bullitt County feel as two rising seniors and a former head coach were all part of the festivities.
This annual summer contest pits the best players from the Fifth and Sixth Regions (West) against the top players from the Seventh and Eighth Region (East).
At halftime of the girls’ game, former Bullitt East head coach Jerry Troutman (above, with Game Director Marty Donlon) was recognized as one of the four girls’ coaches who took part in the inaugural game in 1987. This was the 25th anniversary of that contest.
In the girls’ game, Bullitt Central senior-to-be Kayla Riggs took part and scored four points, but the West squad could not overcome a 54-17 halftime hole and lost 107-60.
Bullitt East standout Trey Rakes was a big part of the West squad in the boys’ contest. With the game on the line, Rakes drilled a 15-foot jumper to give the West a 122-121 win.
Rakes finished with 15 points. While this basket probably won’t end up on ESPN, it is at least the third time in the last year that Rakes has hit a shot in the final seconds to win a game.
Bullitt East teammates Derek Willis and Rusty Troutman were voted into the game by the Sixth Region coaches, but both players opted not to play on Saturday.
Neither is injured and will be playing with the Chargers in a tournament in Louisville this week.
