Education foundation hosts Pre-Derby Affair

MOUNT WASHINGTON – Over the years, there are many things that teachers would like to have for their classrooms or field trips they would like to take with their students.

But the money is just not there in the school budget.

Many times, teachers have been known to take money out of their own pockets to pay for supplies in the classroom.

For the past three years, the Bullitt County Foundation for Excellence in Public Education has tried to provide some of those needed funds.

And its biggest annual fund-raiser is set for Friday, April 26, at MillaNova Winery in Mount Washington.

The third annual fund-raiser is being called the Bullitt County Pre-Derby Affair and it will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Chairman Susan Bradbury said that the foundation was formed with the intent to raise money for teacher grants that will provide new and innovative learning opportunities for local students.

After providing $3,028 in grants the first year, the 2012 appropriations grew to $7,000.

This year, the foundation hopes to award grants in the area of $12,000.

In a recent discussion with the Bullitt County Public School Board, Bradbury said that the foundation has been successful in securing some donations.

More recently, employees with the school system have begun contributing through payroll deductions.

As of that meeting, 97 staff members pledged to contribute a total of over $4,400 for the year.

She added praise upon Traci Gould at Shepherdsville Elementary for getting 96 percent participation.

But the biggest fund-raiser each year is the event prior to the Kentucky Derby.

This year’s event will provide a change in scenery and a change in the program.

A $50 per person ticket will get you dinner and wine tasting, as well as music by Jonathon Rideout.

The catered meal will include filet mignon and chicken cordon blu.

Derby attire, including hats, is encouraged. Dancing will be optional.

In addition to the wine tasting, visitors are invited to purchase the product. Live and silent auction items will be up for bid.

Bradbury said that the foundation plays a key role in providing extra learning opportunities for the students.

Tickets are available by calling 955-7181 or 869-6803. Tables can also be reserved.

MillaNova Winery is located on Gentry Lane off Highway 44 East in Mount Washington.
