SHEPHERDSVILLE -- What a nice way to spend a summer afternoon.

While the sun may be blazing, a nice trip down the tree-shaded river in a tube might provide that perfect way to relax.

For years, people have looked at the Salt River and discussed ways to make it more of a recreational attraction.

There are those who will do a little fishing and others will jump in a kayak or a canoe.

Now, there is another way to utilize the resources of the Salt River.

The Awesome Lazy River recently opened at the World’s Most Awesome Flea Market in Shepherdsville. The market is located at 165 Dawson Drive off Cedar Grove Road, just west of Interstate 65.

One of the owners, Grayson Gasser, said he got the idea for the service because friends of theirs have one on the Guadalupe River in Texas.

“It’s just a fun time for everyone to relax in the sun,” he said.

Hundreds of large tubes are available.

The lazy river is open every day in July from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be open on the weekends in August. The final day of the inaugural season will be on Labor Day.

The cost is $10 for a single tube or $20 for a double.

The route starts at the flea market and ends at the railroad track bridge in Shepherdsville, Gasser said. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete depending on how strong the water current is.

And for safety, there will be a boat patrolling up and down the route. Gasser said there are rope swings and an island along the way that guests can visit if they wish, otherwise they must remain in their tubes.

The group provides a shuttle service back to the market at the end of the ride.

All ages four years and older are welcome to participate. Life jackets will be issued unless a waiver is signed otherwise.

Patrons must wear shoes or an aquatic sock to protect their feet.

Alcohol is allowed for those 21 years and older but not in glass bottles.
