SHEPHERDSVILLE - Matthew Hatfield found a positive from the recent flooding along the Salt River.

    A 68-pound positive.

Hatfield caught a large catfish while fishing at the Shepherdsville City Park Monday evening. The fish was officially weighed at Fischer’s Sporting Goods.

“I never would’ve dreamed something that big would come out of the Salt River,” Hatfield said.

The Shepherdsville resident has had success at the City Park before, bringing in a 46-pounder last October. He had experienced previous success in flooded waters.

Hatfield was near the playground area of the City Park when he reeled in the prize. He said there was no trick to the catch.

“I used a $30 catfish rod from Wal-Mart and one nightcrawler,” he said.

Hatfield fishes frequently at the Kentucky Dam, but lives within walking distance of the City Park.

“The biggest I ever caught (at Kentucky Dam) was 32 pounds,” he said. “I got this one a half-mile from home.”

The catfish was cleaned and prepared for eating, with plenty to pass out amongst family and friends.

“I don’t like fish,” Hatfield admitted. “I was told it had a good taste.”
