Four Bullitt wrestles qualify for state meet

LOUISVILLE - The first-year Bullitt East wrestling program had a solid opening trip to a regional tournament on Saturday as a pair of wrestles qualified for this week’s State Championships in Frankfort.


Bullitt Central’s program also advanced a pair of wrestlers to the final round of the season.

Bullitt East junior Justin Smith reached the semi-finals before losing in the 189-pound class. He eventually finished fourth to make the state meet.

In addition, Bullitt East’s Reece Beck will be wrestling on Thursday after finishing fourth in the 130-pound class.

Bullitt East’s Cole Gilbert will be an alternate at the state meet after finishing fifth in the regional at 140-pounds.

Bullitt Central also had a pair of fourth-place finishers.

Senior Adam Mann will be returning to the state tournament at 103-pounds while James Johnson overcame an early loss and advanced at 160-pounds.

The Cougars’ Jacob McCarthy will be an alternate at 119-pounds.

Out of 13 teams in the region, Bullitt East finished tenth with 48 points while Bullitt Central was just behind with 47 points. Southern repeated as the team champion.
