HILLVIEW - A local businessman plans to incorporate personal skills and conscious in hopes of offering quality furniture products at a reasonable price.

Franke's Furniture and Mattress opened in July, featuring new and used furniture pieces collected by owner Mark Franke.

A Brooks resident, Franke decided to try the furniture business after 15 years in construction. His idea came about after fixing furniture pieces for a peddler's mall.

"I talked to someone about a booth," he said. "I got some old furniture, fixed it up and it sold well."

Franke stepped it up to a spot inside the Bargain Barn in Louisville where his pieces could be purchased. His father first recommended a move to the current Hillview location.

"I have twice the size here and it's a good location on Preston Highway," he said.

Franke's primarily features used furniture improved by Franke before it is placed for sale. Each item is repaired and/or steam cleaned prior to showroom presentation.

"Some people buy a piece and then put it on the floor to sell," Franke said. "I don't want to sell somebody else's dirt. It's good used furniture at a real good price. It's tough for some people in this economy and this is a good option."

Franke said some items, such as dressers or desks, might be "scratch and dent" but he tries to get pieces with little or no damage.

New furniture includes items such as mattresses and headboards for beds. Franke's also features an assortment of wall clocks and grandfather clocks that Franke himself collects and restores.

"I collect them," he said. "I like to try to fix them. I enjoy doing this."

Franke's Furniture and Mattress is located at 6504 Preston Highway in Hillview. Store hours are weekdays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 957-4178.
