LOUISVILLE - Early season bragging rights as the top girls’ team in the Sixth Region will be on the line Tuesday when Bullitt East travels into Jefferson County to take on Butler, the 2008 Kentucky State Champions.
The two traditional powers are the top-rated teams in the Sixth Region this season. In the pre-season coaches’ poll, Butler was ranked first in the Sixth Region with Bullitt East second. However, in the overall state rankings, Bullitt East was 10th and Butler was 24th.
The Bearettes won the 2008 state title and last season lost to eventual state champion Iroquois in the championship game of the Sixth Region Tournament.
Butler does have a new coach this season, Larry Just, who is the third head coach in as many seasons for the program.
This game will also showcase the top two players in the Sixth Region as both Bullitt East senior Kayla Thacker and Butler senior Whitney Reed are both rated among the top 25 players in the state this season.
Reed is a 5-8 forward who averaged 13.2 points last season for a Butler team that posted a 19-7 mark.
Butler did defeat Bullitt East 63-47 early last season.
The Lady Bears have opened the season with wins over Southern and then a key win over Central last Friday. Bullitt East has wins over Pleasure Ridge Park and Bullitt Central.
This will be a girl/boy doubleheader on Tuesday at Butler. The girls’ game will be at 6 p.m. with the Charger boys then taking on Butler in the second game.
