HILLVIEW - City employees are now aware of their new benefits in Hillview.

Insurance was the feature topic of the February city business meeting as the council voted to change option plans.

Employees will belong to the Anthem Blue Access Option 7 plan with prescription drug option C. The change in plans from Option 3 was first publicly discussed at a special business meeting Feb. 1.

Council member Greg Burton said employee health insurance costs to the city rose about 10 percent the previous year and about eight percent this year.

With the city financially strained to continue paying the increases, a committee was established at the special meeting made up of Burton and council members David Conn and Jo-Ann Wick. The committee met with local financial advisor Tony Lee.

The new plan would cost employees between $100 and $200 less than the current plan while maintaining a 90/10 coverage split.

Conn said the new plan would cost the city almost $110,000, while the old plan remaining in effect would cost nearly $122,000, based on the same number of city employees.

Changes in the new Option 7 plan from the original Option 3 plan include deductible increases from $250 to $500 for a single plan and $750 to $1,000 for a family.

The annual out-of-pocket maximum also increases from $1,500 to $2,500 for an individual and from $3,000 to $5,000 for a family.

Burton mentioned that there would be no additional charges for employees.

Following the unanimous council vote, Burton said insurance coverage needed to be reviewed throughout the year by the committee.

“The prices can go up and it can quickly hurt the city financially,” he said.
