HILLVIEW - The City of Hillview continues to offer opportunities for citizens to maintain physical fitness.
In recent years the city implemented a health walk along city sidewalks.
Now, with the transfer of civic offices to the new Hillview Government Center, the Hillview Community Center makes the most of newly-found space with the addition of a fitness center.
City recreation director Terry Bohannon said four new exercise machines were available to the public in the former city hall offices.
Among the equipment is a Bowflex Home Gym, featuring a vast number of exercises for the entire body at different weight levels.
"You can pretty much do anything on it," Bohannon said.
An elliptical machine acted as a stair climber for a solid workout on the legs. Bohannon said added parts turn the machine into a full-body workout.
An electronic treadmill features several various cardiovascular workouts, including uphill walking, at various speeds.
The treadmill and a recumbent bike both feature electronic heart monitors as well as iPod docks, allowing exercisers to hear their favorite music while working out.
"The recumbent bike has a back rest," said Bohannon. "It's more comfortable that a stationary back. It's easier on your knees."
The equipment is available to everyone weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., along with the community center's gymnasium area.
Another added feature at the community center is a game room inside the former mayor's office.
Bohannon said a pool table was added to the game room, along with various board games and card games.
The community center's gym area is open daily for walkers from 8-9 a.m.
According to Bohannon, the gym is open after school until 5 p.m. for students age 15 and under on Mondays and Thursdays, for 16 and over Tuesdays and Fridays, and all ages on Wednesdays.
The gym is also available for rental at a cost of $25 an hour for Hillview residents and $35 an hour for non-residents.
A meeting room is also available for rental, $20 an hour for residents and $30 for non-residents.
A daily 24-hour rate is also offered at a cost of $500.
Bohannon reminded that the new government center features a large room for events such as parties, dances and wedding receptions. The main room with a kitchen area included is $75 an hour for residents, $85 an hour for non-residents.
The main room only costs $50 an hour for residents, $60 for non-residents.
