HOLIDAYS - March Madness

It's that time of year, where many folks get their grids out, along with a few bucks, and start torturing themselves with the basketball life known as March Madness.

For those who celebrate the holidays, March Madness comes with a different perspective, the madness of trying to celebrate so many holiday designations in one month.

If you don't believe me, go check out the list of holidays, festivals, designations and special events on this years March calendar located under Events at the Features page of www.pioneernews.net.

Each month there are many designations to help raise awareness for various physical and mental issues. March includes Brain Injury Awareness, Eye Donor, Kidney, Multiple Sclerosis Education and Awareness, Colorectal Cancer Awareness, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness, Endometriosis Awareness and Malignant Hyperthermia Awareness and Training Month.

Among the more interesting designations are Frozen Food, Craft, Peanut, Play-the Recorder, Noodle, March into Literacy and Music in our Schools Month.

This first week of March includes Cheerleading Week, being celebrated most prominently at Bullitt Central High School, where the state cheerleading champions are still excited about placing fourth at Nationals.

March is Peace Corps Month, and Mar. 1 is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the organization, an idea promoted by President John F. Kennedy. Everyone should consider this at least once in their lives.

March means St. Patrick's Day, especially if your Irish. And if your Irish, you know that one day a year for celebration just won't cut it. So keep in mind that March is also Irish-American Heritage Month.

So, just like those basketball grids, get involved early and often. Celebrate all you can during the month of March. If you do anything special, be sure to let us know. We might be able to help you by joining in on the fun.
