MOUNT WASHINGTON - For the first time ever, the three Bullitt County high schools have had the opportunity to compete on the same mats in dual wrestling matches.
The sport is in its infancy at Bullitt East and North Bullitt. The program at Bullitt East was started last year while North Bullitt is competing in the sport for the first time this winter.
Bullitt Central has had wrestling for seven seasons, but is in the midst of a rebuilding campaign as new head coach Mike Taylor is the third coach for the program in the past three seasons.
While most wrestling events are tournaments where a large number of schools compete with each weight class having a bracket for the individual competitors, there are those times when individual schools compete against each other in events called ‘duals’. That was the case on Jan. 15 when all three of the local schools competed in the Region 3 Duals at Southern High School.
At that event, Bullitt East and Bullitt Central did get paired together with Bullitt East grabbing a 54-27 victory. That was the first dual match ever between two Bullitt County schools. A few hours later, North Bullitt and Bullitt East met with the Chargers prevailing 58-24.
On Wednesday, Bullitt East hosted its first-ever wrestling meet with North Bullitt and Nelson County taking part.
In the first ‘dual’, North Bullitt took on Nelson County in the 14-match format. Nelson County won that action by a 60-18 score. It was much closer in the second match as Nelson County needed a pin in the last division to beat Bullitt East 46-36.
In the final match, Bullitt East and North Bullitt squared off again. This time it was all Chargers as the red and gold turned back the Eagles 72-12.
In that competition, Bullitt East got wins from Evan Norris, Hunter Norris, Kelsey Fell, Cruise Coulter, Reece Beck, Tevin Smith, Cole Gilbert, Peyton Harris, Michael O’Neill, Blake Lathem, Kirkland Alcorn and Dylan Ferguson. North Bullitt had wins by Dakota Pike and Cody Southerland.
The three teams will not likely compete against each other again in a dual meet this season. The teams are now looking ahead to the Region 3 event that will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Doss High School.
