Pollywog Play Parties:  Life in a Pond

Saturday, July 2 (every first Saturday of the month)

10:30 a.m. – noon

Education Center

For pollywogs, there’s no place like home in the pond! Pollywog Play Parties combine music, art, language and outside play to teach about nature themes.  Led by engaging child educators, Pollywog Play Parties provide take home lessons for outdoor play learning. Come to Bernheim monthly on each first Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon to connect your family with nature in exciting ways.  Sponsored by PNC Bank, Pollywog Play Parties are free for everyone (free for members and free with admission to Bernheim for non-members).  Programs include indoor and outdoor activities. Class sizes are limited and fill up quickly; call (502) 955-8512 by the Friday before the program to reserve your place in the pollywog pond.

 

ECO Kids Discovery Days: Living on the Edge

Saturday, July 2 (Every first and third Saturday of the month)

The ECO in Bernheim’s ECO Kids programs stands for Every Child Outdoors.  Each first and third Saturday at Bernheim, ECO Kids Discovery Days provides kids and families with opportunities to get outside for play, fresh air and to learn about nature.  ECO Kids programs are free for members and included with admission for non-members.

The water’s edge is brimming with an amazing variety of plant and animal life.  Kids and their families will explore this riparian habitat through the On-Your-Own Challenge, available in the Visitor Center from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Discovery Stations are available at the Visitor Center from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

 

O.W.L.S.:  The Art of Butterflying

The first Wednesday of each month March through December, Bernheim offers a variety of hikes, activities and programs designed for Older, Wiser and Livelier Seniors.  O.W.L.S. programs are led by Bernheim’s talented volunteer naturalists. Programs vary each month.

Explore the world of butterflies at Bernheim, the flying jewels of summer.  Be dazzled by their brilliant colors and form on this easy, outdoor ramble.

 

Wild Edibles of Summer

Registration and payment are required by 4:30 p.m. on the day prior to the program; call (502) 955-8512 We’ve all heard, “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”  Kentucky’s Naturalist of the Year, Wren Smith, believes this old adage provides a pathway for all of us toward deeper and more heart-felt connections with nature and this planet we call home.

Learn to safely and responsibly prepare foods from cattails, daylilies, elderberry and much more through the expertise of Smith, who has over 25 years experience with wild foods. Dress for the weather and wear your hiking boots for the wild foods ramble included with the program.

 

Full “Thunder” Moon Night Hike

Bernheim night hikes are great opportunities to relax in the beauty of nature bathed in the light of a full moon.  Interpretive naturalists will guide you and provide information about night ecology and lunar lore.  Each full moon program is timed to begin near sunset and during the rise of a full moon over the tree tops.  In order to walk without flashlights, all full moon programs keep to open areas and established trails.  While cloud cover doesn’t usually cancel Bernheim night programs, severe weather sometimes does.  Please call between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on the day of the program to find out about last minute changes due to weather conditions.  Dress for the weather and outdoor hiking.  Please note that while Bernheim does allow dogs on a leash, we ask that you leave your furry friends at home for group hikes.  Registration and payment are required by 4:30 p.m. on the day prior to the program; call (502) 955-8512.

 

New Program Series: Smart Gardens and Landscapes: Planning the Fall Garden

Bernheim’s new monthly series of hands-on workshops teach sustainable horticulture practices.  Smart Garden and Landscapes programs help you transform your yard, urban space, rooftop and street side into green spaces that are attractive, food-producing and beneficial to people’s lives and the environment. Bernheim shows you how to prepare and plan your garden as you learn about plants, soil, ecology, insects, wildlife and much more.

 

July’s program is on planning your fall garden.  July is the perfect month to start planning and planting your fall garden. Extend the life of your edible landscape by planting cool-season crops. Discover vegetables that thrive in fall and winter months and learn tried and true techniques to lengthen the growing season. You will be able to harvest well into the winter months.

 

Workshops take place at Bernheim’s Research Center from 10:00 a.m. – noon and are $10.00 for Bernheim members and $15.00 for non-members.  Registration and payment are required by 4:30 p.m. on the day prior to the program; call (502) 955-8512.

Bernheim at Night: Summer Star Stories and Sky Watch Night

Be regaled with stories of the spring skies, with close-up views of the moon and other celestial matter courtesy of The Louisville Astronomical Society and Bernheim volunteer naturalists.   An insightful indoor presentation begins the evening experience.  Learn how to look through telescopes, hear a few star stories and you will be sufficiently “moonstruck” for this lunar lighted moon walk.

 

Dress for the weather. In the event of rain there will be an informative indoor program. Only severe weather conditions will cancel the program.  Registration and payment are required by 4:30 p.m. on the day prior to the program; call (502) 955-8512.  Call the day of the program for any changes due to the weather.
