Lady Chargers continue to show better play in Florida

Bullitt East in the Florida Sun

MOUNT WASHINGTON - After closing out play in their own tournament just before Christmas with their best effort of the season, the Bullitt East Lady Chargers carried over that strong play in the southern Resort Beach Blow-out in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

After winning three straight games in pool play early in the week, coach Chris Stallings’ team played in the championship game against Choctawhatchee, Fla., a team that had lost just once in its first 14 games of the season. Bullitt East ran into a buzzsaw that day, falling 57-40 after being outscored 28-10 in the second quarter.

“We had a fantastic trip, team wise,” Stallings said after the team got back to Mount Washington. “The trip as a while was fantastic for our team as we were able to spend time together both on and off the court throughout the week. That will be big for us moving forward.”

That action left Bullitt East with a 6-8 record heading into 2012.

As with any trip out-of-state over the holidays, you never know exactly what level of competition you are going to face. It turned out to a week where Bullitt East scored only 34 points in one game, and won, while in another game they allowed only 12 points in the second half, and lost.

After the three wins in pool play, Bullitt East ran into a tough foe in the championship game as they faced Choctawhatchee, a team that started four seniors and one junior. The one junior has committed to Florida State and she led all scorers in the game with 29 points including 15 points in the second quarter.

The Florida team led 17-9 after the first quarter, but then blew the game open when they shot 87 percent in the second quarter to post a 28-10 run that put them ahead 45-19 at halftime. Despite only giving up 12 points in the second half, Bullitt East lost 57-40.

“The second quarter really did us in,” Stallings admitted. “We tried a lot of different things in that quarter but we could just not slow them down during that run.”

Senior Ashley Duvall led Bullitt East with 15 points while sophomore Courtney Pfister totaled 10 points.

In two of the three games in pool play, Bullitt East turned in strong offensive efforts. The red and gold were able to beat Evangelical Christian from Memphis, TN. In the middle of the three games by a 63-34 count as Duvall and Nikole Isabel each scored eight points. A day later, Bullitt East scored 54 points and beat Dyer County, TN. by 20 points as Taylor Blain led the way with 11 points.

In the other game, sophomore point guard Emily Fryman scored nine points as Bullitt East slipped past the host school 34-23. Despite the low score, 12 different players for the Lady Chargers scored at least a point in that game.

At the end of the tournament, both Ashley Duvall and Fryman were named to the All-Tournament team.

Bullitt East won’t get much time to bounce back from the holidays as they will be back in action on Tuesday of this week as they play host to Iroquois. On Friday, the Lady Chargers will play a key 24th District game when they play host to the Lady Chargers from Jeffersontown High School in a game slated to start at 6 p.m.
