MOUNT WASHINGTON - Despite not being back in school yet after the holidays, the Bullitt East Chargers picked up its first victory in district play on Friday as they traveled in Jefferson County and defeated Jeffersontown 80-54.

The win was the 12th this season for the Lady Chargers in 16 games. That is more wins than any other team in the Sixth Region.

The outcome in this game was never in doubt as the Lady Chargers led 14-8 after the first quarter and stretched that to 34-14 at halftime.

Bullitt East had good balance as both junior Taylor Blain and eighth-grader Lindsey Duvall each scored 18 points. Blain connected on four three-pointers in the win. Kaleigh Sharpe came off the bench to score nine points.

Jeffersontown (4-11) did get 31 points from Daphene Brown, but then had no other player score more than 12 points.

Bullitt East was off the early part of this week and will return to action on Saturday in the Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase at Pleasure Ridge Park. The Lady Chargers will play at 5 p.m. against LaRue County.

Christmas Tourney

Other than a few slow starts, the Lady Chargers had a positive outing in the Bourbon County Christmas Tournament, going 3-1 in the 14-team event that was held after Christmas.

The only loss in the tournament came in the second game as they fell behind Shelby Valley 24-7 in the first quarter and could never get back any closer than seven points before falling 67-57. After rolling past Deming in the consolation bracket, Bullitt East earned fifth-place in the tournament with a two-point win over the host squad on the final day.

“We fought hard and we played hard,” Bullitt East head coach Chris Stallings said after the team got back to Mount Washington. “We just have to get off to better starts. That’s something we have to get better at.”

Bullitt East outscored Shelby Valley in two quarters but could not overcome the slow start. That Shelby Valley team has been ranked among the top-20 teams in the state.

“Shelby Valley has a nice club,” Stallings said. “They outrebounded us in the first half and that’s another reason we were behind.”

Bullitt East was battling colds and the flu during the week of the Bourbon County event. Starting center Kylee Willis did not make the trip because of illness.

At the end of the tournament, Duvall was named to the All-Tournament squad.
