MOUNT WASHINGTON -- Rain on Friday shortened the High Five Sporting Good/Bullitt East Invitational, but the Lady Chargers picked up some much needed wins on Saturday as they won two of three games in pool play.

Unfortunately, because of the rain on Friday, the tournament format had to be altered, keeping the host team from moving out of pool play. Instead of all the teams moving out of pool play into a single-elimination tournament, only the two pool winners advanced to a championship game.

The first annual event was won by Ballard, the state’s top-ranked team, as they rolled past Beth Haven 10-0.

Beth Haven had been the one team to beat Bullitt East in pool play, pulling out a 4-3 decision. Bullitt East battled back to pick up wins over Sixth Region rival Presentation and then closing pool play with a 7-2 decision over Grant County.

Earlier in the week, Bullitt East had suffered a 15-4 setback against Male, one of the top 20 teams in the state.

Bullitt East did get a key victory on Thursday as they turned back 24th District rival Fairdale 12-0.

That action left the Lady Chargers with a 4-8 record after the first three weeks of the regular season.

Coach Ed Phelps’ team is now 1-0 in district play.
