SHEPHERDSVILLE – Coming off a disappointing 1-2 record in their only holiday tournament of the season, Bullitt Central Lady Cougars picked up a win on Monday when they traveled to Campbellsville and knocked out the host team 59-28.

The contest was a rare, single season game in the midst of the holidays, something that doesn’t normally happen. However, the Lady Cougars entered just the one tournament, the Salt River Electric event at Spencer County High School so they were looking for games.

As it turns out, the two teams will meet again on the final night of the regular season when Campbellsville travels to Shepherdsville on Feb. 21.

Bullitt Central actually trailed 12-8 as they were sluggish after the bus ride, but the maroon and gray answered with a 15-1 run in the second quarter to take control of the contest. In the second half, the Lady Cougars rolled to a 36-15 advantage.

“We played well in the second half,” second-year Bullitt Central head coach Kyle Roach said later in the week. “We started out real slow. We hadn’t played since the Spencer County event (nine days earlier).”

Bullitt Central did get some time to enjoy the holidays as well as getting into the gym. They did miss a work-out on Thursday because of inclement weather as they prepared for a game this past Saturday in Frankfort.

“We’re just trying to improve our individual skills and working on handling pressure,” Roach said. “We’ve been seeing a lot of zones so we’ve been working on attacking that.”

Bullitt Central, a team without a senior, moved to 6-4 with the win.

Junior Breanna Richardson led the way for the maroon and gray with 17 points including a trio of three-pointers.

The Lady Cougars will be on the court on Monday of this week as they play host to Bardstown. That will be the team’s final tune-up before hosting North Bullitt on Friday in a game that will be used in the seeding process for the 23rd District Tournament.

Lady Chargers Roll

Not happy with just rolling through South Carolina over the holidays, the Bullitt East Lady Chargers decided to head north after playing three games in South Carolina and competed at West Mecklenburg, a team in Charlotte, North Carolina.

West Mecklenburg didn’t put up any more of a fight than the teams in South Carolina did as Bullitt East won 47-25.

The travel weary Lady Chargers got off to a little bit of a slow start as they scored only 19 points in the first half, but they still led by ten points. They then blew the game open with a 20-3 surge in the third frame.

Freshman Lindsey Duvall paced the way for Bullitt East (9-2) with 12 points while senior Mackenzie Bass scored nine points.

After playing against Bryan Station on Saturday, Bullitt East will be back on the court on Tuesday as they host to Fern Creek in a key 24th District match-up. The boys’ team will play first at 6 p.m. with the girls’ game to follow at around 7:30 p.m.
