HEBRON ESTATES Ð The best start in program history reached ten games between the holidays as the North Bullitt Lady Eagles brought home the championship trophy from the RaffertyÕs/Double Dog Classic Tournament at Edmonson County High School.
This was the only regular season tournament on the North Bullitt schedule this season and they made the most of it. There were two close games to start the event, a 58-53 win over Breckinridge County and then it took an overtime in the semi-finals for the green and gold to advance 60-54 over the host team.
That set up the final against Southwestern, a team located in Pulaski County (Somerset). It was close for three quarters before North Bullitt pulled away from a three-point advantage with a 23-11 surge over the final eight minutes to win 70-55.
ÒWe played really well in the tournament,Ó North Bullitt head coach Amber Courtney said a few days later. ÒWe had the close games early and the overtime win. Then we had some of our younger kids step up. Overall, we played extremely well.Ó
There were actually two events going on at the same time between Edmonson County High School and the countyÕs middle school. The Lady Eagles started play at the middle school while the boysÕ event was going on at the high school. North Bullitt also had its boysÕ team in the other tournament and the Eagles had a good week, bouncing back from a frustrating loss in the first game to win twice in the eight-team event.
With the three wins, the Lady Eagles are 10-0 heading into the new year.
ÒRachel Badgett had a phenomenal week for us,Ó Courtney said of her junior post player.
North Bullitt spent two nights in a local hotel and it was a solid team-building event according to Courtney.
ÒWe ate dinner together and swam together and did everything together,Ó the veteran coach said. ÒThis team is fun to be around. They like each other and like being together. They want to be with each other.
ÒThat helps us on the floor,Ó the Courtney added. ÒThey trust each other. It helps being so close on and off the floor.Ó
The Lady Eagles do struggle with rebounding at times, but they handled that well in this event.
ÒWe rebounded better in this tournament,Ó Courtney pointed out. ÒWe have been working on rebounding.Ó
After six days off, North Bullitt was back in action on Friday in a ÔshowcaseÕ game at Central Hardin against Ballard (see story in WednesdayÕs edition). The green and gold have a big week this week as they play a pair of games against 23rd District foes. On Tuesday they travel to Moore and then on Friday they will be in Shepherdsville to battle Bullitt Central.
The Lady Eagles also have a game on Wednesday at Martha Layne Collins.
