HEBRON ESTATES – In a true rebuilding year, North Bullitt girls’ basketball coach Bill Robinette had several reasons to smile on Monday night.
But, of course, the Lady Eagles were far from where the veteran coach would like to be by the time district play begins in March.
Opening the season at home, North Bullitt clawed its way to a 49-20 victory over Shawnee.
Down 7-6, North Bullitt would score the next 17 points to take the commanding lead.
Robinette liked the fact that none of the players were afraid to look for a shot, although he felt patience was needed, as well as better shot selection.
With such a young, inexperienced team, seniors Ashley Goeing, Christina Dilley and Chelsea Hoke provided scoring and leadership for the Lady Eagles.
During the first quarter run, Breanne Kuffner, Mecenzie Ellis, Holly White, Taylor McCoy, Dilley, Hoke and Goeing all contributed points.
It was a pressing defense that caused numerous Shawnee turnovers and bad shots that led to the run.
In the third quarter, North Bullitt got on another big roll - outscoring the visitors 18-0 at one point.
During that stretch, getting the ball inside to Goeing was the game plan as she scored 10 of her game-high 13 points within a 3-minute period.
“We had that good stretch in the third quarter where we got a lot of easy baskets,” said Robinette.
He said the team lacked patience in the first half even though it took a commanding lead into the locker room.
“We need to move the ball more,” said Robinette. “But we lack experience and our goal is to get better every day.
“We need game experience,” said Robinette. “Every game we want to get better.”
While there might be plenty of room for improvement, Robinette said it is good to get a victory in the opener.
“It gives us a little confidence,” said Robinette. “It’s a good group of players who work hard and they will get better.”
