A local senior softball has made national news by capturing the SSUSA world title in Phoenix, Ariz.

Jim and Joe’s Icemen, coached by John Coffman of Mount Washington, defeated some of the elite teams in the country to claim the championship.

The team batting average was a red hot .731 during the tournament.

“We are a family as well as a darn good team,” said Coffman. “The title was won in a 60-year-old Major division.”

Team members are from Bullitt, Henry and Jefferson counties, as well as Floyd County, Ind.

The team has now captured victory in four of the major senior softball organizations.

Every player on the winning team is presented a ring. Winning this tournament also qualifies the team to play in the Tournament of Champions, which is held each February in Florida.

Traveling to the tournaments is expensive but Coffman said Jim and Betty McFarland of Jim & Joe’s Ice has been a major sponsor. The team has also been supported by other businesses and also hosts fund-raisers throughout the year.

Team members include Bobby Mefford, Dan Vogt, Dickie Vaughn, Bill Brutscher, John Coffman, Mike Robey, Anthony Steele, Charlie Nalley, Gary Walter, Bill Heim, John White, Charles Marrero, Eddie Perry, Harry Young, Mike Ludwig, Laymon Tucker, Larry Metcalf, Bill Needy and Eddie Rudolph.

In addition, Mefford, Vogt, Steele, White and Marrero were selected for the all-tournament team.
