SHEPHERDSVILLE -- When Keisha Hillard needed a name for her dog grooming business, she found inspiration in her inseperable companion of 16 years: Poofy, the German Shephard.

Poofy Pets, LLC, owned and run by Hillard, opened at the end of April. Before becoming a groomer, Hillard worked as a veterinary technician in Bardstown.

“I couldn’t get along with losing the animals and became very tender-hearted and attached,” she said.

She started an apprenticeship and groomed for several years before transferring to Audubon Animal Hospital in Louisville for 10 years.

“After gas prices became too high, I decided to move my work back to Sheperdsville, where I lived,” Hillard said. “I had a lot of clientele that followed me and 19 years of experience, so I decided to open up my own place.”

Located at 586 North Buckman Street, Poofy Pets offers grooming services to all types of animals. Although she usually works on dogs, Hillard has groomed ferrets, cats, rabbits, and llamas.

Prices depend on the size and condition of the animal.

For instance, if a dog’s fur is matted, grooming will cost more. Hillard offers ear plucks and flushes, toenail trims, baths, any choice of hair cut, and a seasonal bandanna to complete the look.

A few Saturdays a month, Hillard will offer bathing from 9 a.m. to noon. She also plans on starting a pet-sitting service as early as June.

“I always dog-sit for my neighbors and family,” she said. “So I figured while I am here all day, I can watch the dogs and take them home with me if need be.”

The dogs will have their own beds to sleep in and a play area for daytime hours. Hillard is an animal lover; she owns five dogs, five cats, a pig, horses, and goats.

She also volunteers with rescue services, grooming adoptive dogs before they leave with their new owners.

“All the animals that come in here are like my extended family,” she said.

Poofy Pets is open Monday through Friday by appointment. Hillard starts as early as 8 a.m. and is usually finished by 3 p.m.
