PIONEER VILLAGE - Sam Hutchins likes to read.

In fact, he likes to read a lot.

As a participant in the Maryville Reader program, the second grader has accumulated 146 points.

And those points represent earning one point for every book the 8-year-old has read.

Yes, that means he has read 146 books this year.

“It helps you learn more words,” Hutchins said was one reason he likes to read.

Adventure books and mystery books are his favorite.

Most days, you could find Hutchins at home reading. And he will keep reading this summer.

His goal next school year is to top this year’s total.
