Screening mammograms are one of our best weapons against breast cancer. To help make this essential test convenient for the women in our community, we contract with James Graham Brown Cancer Center to provide the mobile mammogram unit here at the Bullitt County Health Department.

It is estimated that one-third of all breast cancer deaths in America each year could be prevented by early detection. Breast cancer treated in its early stage can usually be treated successfully.

Mammography dates for 2009 are the following:

January 28, February 25, March 25, April 29, May 27, June 24, July 22, August 5, September 23, October 28, November 18 and December 9.

Each date is on a Wednesday and appointment times run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Unfortunately, not every woman 40 or over will be screened for cancer. If you are age 18 or older, you need a yearly breast exam by a health professional, pap test, pelvic exam, and instruction breast self-exam. If you are age 40 or over you need a yearly breast exam by a health professional, pap test, pelvic exam, and a mammogram.

There are two ways to access this convenient service. Your doctor can write you a prescription for a mammogram or you can have a Cancer Screening through the Health Department. Here at Bullitt County Health Department on the day of your appointment, clinic staff will ask you about your medical history and talk abut ways you can improve your health and prevent disease. This is a good time to discuss any concerns and ask questions. Next, a medical professional will examine your breasts and you will learn how to examine your own breasts. The health department staff will let you know the results of your tests.

The Kentucky Women’s Cancer Screening Program provides free or low-cost mammograms. These services are available every year for women 21-64 who do not have health insurance to cover the cost. If you are age 20 or under, call the health department to find out what services are available for you. For women over 65 years old Medicare/Medicaid allows for annual mammograms.

Call today to set up your appointment, you must have a doctor’s note or go through our screening process. Appointments will go fast; call 502-543-2415 or 502-955-7837.
