I blame my interest in journalism on one thing, “All the President's Men.” Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman are the leads in the movie. They star as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein respectively, The Washington Post reporting duo that uncovered the Watergate Scandal, and as a result, made journalism history.During my freshman year Introduction to Journalism class at Bullitt East High School, we watched the movie and I remember being fascinated by the work Woodward and Bernstein did.
I had a talent for writing and telling stories and journalism seemed like a career where I could combine the two and do something I enjoyed.
I’ve spent most of my time in high school and college participating in student media as a writer learning the ins and outs of journalism.
Six years and a countless amount of stories and photos later, I find myself still intrigued by the business and taking on the task of my first internship here at The Pioneer News.
As a Bullitt County native, I am excited to be home for the summer to have the opportunity to report on the comings and goings of our county.
I’ve been working on a variety of different stories during my time here; I’ve even covered a breaking news story during my second day on the job. I’m pretty sure I’ve also learned more about Bullitt County in my first week than I have in 20 years living here.
Will I uncover Bullitt County’s own version of a Watergate Scandal? Probably not, but Iím still thankful for the opportunity to join the staff of the Pioneer News to learn more about journalism and grow my skills as a journalist.
