NICHOLS - When a family member arrived at the home of Avery and Marion Blevens on Monday afternoon, they were greeted by a horrific tragedy.

The married couple was found deceased in a bedroom in the home on Cow Branch Road in western Bullitt County.

Lt. Mike Murdoch, public information officer for the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office, said that deputies got a call at 12:58 p.m. on Monday.

Arriving at the scene, the deputies confirmed that two adults were dead.

The sheriff’s criminal investigation division and the forensics unit responded.

While it was reported as a possible murder/suicide, Murdoch said no official word was released until Tuesday afternoon.

He said the sheriff’s office did its investigation and the autopsy performed confirmed the cause of death.

Murdoch said it appeared that Avery Blevens, 63, shot his wife, age 65, numerous times with a .22 long rifle.

At some point, he then shot and killed himself.

It appeared that the shooting could have come the day before the bodies were discovered. The autopsy confirmed that both did die from gunshot wounds.

In talking with family members, Murdoch said the husband suffered a stroke a few years ago and that seemed to cause some mental issues.

That behavior had resulted in some strain in the marriage. However, there had been no history of domestic issues and family members reported that the couple had a happy marriage.

Funeral arrangements were not available at press time.
