North Bullitt earns state powerlifting recognition

 HEBRON ESTATES – For the second straight year, North Bullitt hosted the Kentucky State Powerlifting Championships.

The event was held in the Eagles’ Nest on Saturday, March 8 and it was a good day for the host school as the Eagles came out on top, winning for a second straight year.

North Bullitt finished with 74 points in the varsity competition and that was ten points better than runner-up Madisonville. St. Xavier was third with 48 points while Carroll County was fourth (20 points) while Trinity was fifth (13).

Other schools competing on that day included Fairdale, Harrison County, Oldham County and Holy Cross.

It was a good meet for North Bullitt junior Jack Barnett as the senior set a state record with his final total of 880-pounds in the 220-pound weight class. Barnett had a bench press of 345-pounds and a dead lift of 535-pounds. That dead left was the best of any lifter in the upper half of the weight classes.

North Bullitt junior Brody Daugherty also set a state record in the 123-pound weight class as she set new state records in all three categories. Daugherty had a bench press of 210-pounds and a dead lift of 350-pounds to give him a state record total of 560-pounds.

Another honor for North Bullitt was collected by sophomore Logan James who had the best dead-lift of the day in the smaller weight classes. James, who was in the 181-pound division, had a dead lift of 505 pounds.

Overall, nine North Bullitt lifters finished in one of the top three positions in the 12 different weight classes.

In the 114-pound weight class, North Bullitt junior Conner Noonan won with a total of 340-pounds (95 bench; 245 dead lift). Daugherty won the 123-pounds division with his total of 560-pounds (210; 360). At 148-pounds, North Bullitt’s Corey Baker, a senior, was second overall with a lift of 580-pounds (200; 380).

North Bullitt went one-two in the 165-pound division as junior Dalton Casey had the top lift at 720-pounds (280; 440) while Tristan Bright-Hadley, a senior, was second at 715-pounds (245-470). James then won the 181-pound class with his 805 total (300-505).

In the upper weight classes, North Bullitt got a second place finish from senior Jarrett Carter in the 198-pound class with his lifts at 730-pounds (260, 470). Barnett then won the 220-pound class with an 880-total (345-535). In the super-heavyweight class, North Bullitt sophomore Wyatt Blevins won with a total lift of 835-pounds (335; 500).

There was also a junior-varsity division for this meet and North Bullitt finished second with 50 points. That was five points behind the winning total of Madisonville. St. Xavier finished third with 38 points.

Picking up wins for the Eagles in the JV meet were freshman Dale Hunt at 114-pounds with a lift of 335-pounds (120-215). Sophomore Tyler Stout also was a winner as he took the 132-pound class with a total lift of 470-pounds (160; 310).

North Bullitt also got second place finishes in two weight classes. Owen Stinson, a sophomore, was second in the 181-pound class with a total lift of 590-pounds (185; 405). Daniel Hook, a sophomore, was second in the 275-pound class with a total of 695-pounds (225; 470).

Picking up third place honors in the JV meet were freshman Jeff Newton at 165-pounds with a total lift of 535-pounds (185; 350). Freshman Derek Downing was third at 198-pounds with a total lift of 505 (145; 360). Another third went to freshman Trent Waltenburg at 242-pounds as he finished with 555-pounds (180-375). In the 275-pound class, Eagle sophomore Travis Sparkman had a 620-pound total lift (200; 420) to finish third.
