North Oldham runs away with Charger Open crown

SHEPHERDSVILLE - The North Oldham boys’ golf team ran off and hid last Wednesday in the Bullitt East Charger Open at Heritage Hill Golf Course.

North Oldham finished with a 298 to easily outdistance Manual’s top team that tied with Greenup County for second with a 307 total. Manual was the defending champion.

Manual and North Oldham were also at the top of the individual results. Manual Akash Mirchandani and North Oldham’s James Wistrom tied for low medalist as each fired a 68 over the par-72 lay-out.

This was the second year for the Bullitt East event at the new Heritage Hill course off Cedar Grove road.

It was a good day for the local teams. Bullitt East’s Number One team finished 12th with a 352 total. That just barely edged out North Bullitt as the Eagles finished with a 355. Bullitt Central was a little further back at 376. Bullitt East had a second team in the event and they had a 407.

The best individual score from the local players came from North Bullitt junior Matt Bloom who finished with an 82. The Eagles also got an 86 from Brandon Goeings, a 90 from Cody Montgomery, a 97 from Jared Able and a 102 from Blake Hardy.

For Bullitt Central, coach Shane Popplewell’s team was paced by Jared Ryan who had an 84 while the squad’s only senior, Sheldon Hoagland, had an 88. The other Bullitt Central scores over their home course included a 91 from Guy Stitt, a 113 from Jacob Richardson and a 116 from Johnny Larison.

The host school was paced by senior Justin York who toured Heritage Hill in 85 strokes. The other top Bullitt East finishes included an 87 from Jake Wilson, and 90s from Darin Snawder and Tyler Mingus. The Charger program also had a 95 by Andrew Harris and a 96 from Donovan Price. Overall, the red and gold also got a 101 from Michael Murphy as well as 105s from Robert Staples and Morgan Hilbert. The other Bullitt East score was a 110 from Matt Murphy.

Other Matches

Bullitt East and North Bullitt did get rained out on Tuesday of last week in a tournament at Oldham County.

Bullitt East did play two other times last week, finished with a 353 total in a tournament at Dale Hollow and a 352 in the tournament at Grayson County.

After starting the season in the Charger Open, Bullitt Central came back with a much better score of 358 on Saturday in the Meade County Invitational at Doe Valley Golf Course. The Cougars were led by Ryan with an 80 while Hoagland had an 88. The other Bullitt Central scores included a 93 by Stitt, a 97 from Richardson and a 100 by Nolan Hoffman.

Girls’ Golf

The Bullitt East Lady Chargers opened the season last Monday in the Sacred Heart Invitational, an event held at Long Run Golf Course in eastern Jefferson County. Coach Andy Oder’s team finished with a 410 total.

Bullitt East got 99s that day from both Katie Nusz and Meredith Oder, a pair of juniors. The team also had a 102 from Maggie Smith and a 110 from Emily Mingus. The team also had a 123 by Melissa Roark and a a131 by Alysa Ridgway.

Later in the week, the Lady Chargers fired a 393 in the Owen County Invitational.

Nusz led the way with an 87 while Meredith Oder had a 92. The team also got a 101 from Smith and a 113 from Roark.
