The economy is getting to everyone, including drug dealers.Kenny Hardin, director of the Bullitt County Drug Task Force, told magistrates of the story of a dealer who was being set up to sell to an informant in the county. But, on top of the price to buy the cocaine, he needed $20 for gas money. The buy was made. While it provides a little humor in a very serious game of drug dealing and drug buying, there is nothing to laugh about when talking about the future of the Bullitt County Drug Task Force. With federal dollars drying up, grants may not be available to fund the task force past September 2008.This is a shame.Since its inception seven years ago, over 1,100 arrests have been made. Contrary to belief, a good percentage of these arrests were of local people. There is a drug problem in Bullitt County. The thought that the work of Hardin and his unnamed officers may end is frightening.A key to the survival of the task force is the partnership with the local police agencies. As a new budget year began this week, it is vital that the cities of Shepherdsville, Mount Washington and Hillview do more than simply say they will provide an officer to the agency. They need to do it immediately. We all know the local agencies at times will be strapped for manpower due to various circumstances. We also know that you must take care of your home people first and to provide protection to your corporate boundaries. At the same time, we know that drugs affect every aspect of crime in our community. From burglaries to writing bad checks to domestic abuse, drugs play a part.Bullitt Fiscal Court members must find a way to make sure the task force continues. The concentrated effort of the small but dedicated group of officers has been impressive. Normal patrol officers and detectives are simply too busy to have the time to devote to the eradication of drugs in our community. We strongly encourage as many cities as possible to devote the resources necessary to place an officer on the task force immediately. And we strongly encourage fiscal court to continue to look for ways to make the funding possible. The drug task force is something Bullitt Countians cannot afford to lose.
