The Lebanon Junction Old Fashioned Days parade is being driven with some new reins this year.

The LJ Fire Department will be sponsoring the parade Sept. 28. In the past, the Old Fashioned Days Committee sponsored it, but will the dismantling of the committee this year, it was time for a new start.

LJ Fire Chief Mark Shumaker said he didn’t want the parade to be canceled due to lack of help, so the fire department volunteered to take it over.

“It’s one of the biggest events of the festival, it didn’t seem right to let it go,” he said.

The theme for the parade will be, “America the Beautiful.”

Those who want to be in the parade must register and pay the $5 fee, regardless if an individual or group. Registration for political groups is $25. Shumaker said early registration is encouraged, but people can still register on Saturday.

Participants must try to arrive at the Pilot truck stop in LJ, near the entrance of Poplar and Ballpark Road, before 9 a.m.

And bring lots of candy to throw to the crowd, he said.

Shumaker said the parade will follow the normal route down Poplar Street, right onto Thompson Avenue, left onto Brook Street and left onto Main Street.

However, since the majority of the festival events will be held in the city park this year, the parade will end there instead of at the church in past years.

Patrons can line up anywhere along the parade route to watch. Shumaker said people should bring chairs and blankets to sit on.

Trophies will be given for the following categories: Best Old Fashion Theme Float, Best Float, Best of Show, Best Equestrian Entry, Best Group, Best Antique Vehicle, Best Customized Car, Best of Show for Cars, Best of Show for Cycles, Best Customized Truck and Best of Show for Trucks.

Announcments for the parade will be down by city hall.

Right after the parade, the Fire Department will have a first chili cook off.
