Sporting an array of vibrant colors, a dozen young ladies were recently initiated into the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls Mount Washington Assembly during a special event held at the Salt River Masonic Lodge.
Sponsored by Salt River Lodge 180 and the local chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star 552, the Mount Washington rainbow girls assembly is part of a global service organization for youth.
Assembly mother adviser, Alma McCoy said the organization is the first of its kind in the area since the 1970s.
McCoy, who is a former rainbow girl, said the organization is dedicated to charity and service to country and community, giving members the opportunity to exercise leadership and gain self confidence as they learn the vital role women play in society.
“It changed my life,” McCoy said of her experience as a rainbow girl.
The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls began nearly a century ago for Masonic daughters and their friends. Today any girl between the ages of 11 and 20 interested in joining is welcome.
From volunteering for different charities, to working to improve their public speaking, to mastering the lessons of Rainbow, members tackle lots of challenging hurdles but ultimately walk away with a sense of pride and accomplishment, according to the rainbow girls website.
McCoy said she built lasting friendships during her time as a rainbow girl and she encouraged all young women to consider joining the sisterhood.
Members will participate in many service projects and social events scheduled for the rest of the year, including fundraisers, garden parties, dinners, trips and more.
