SALEM, Ind. – Following a three week postponement due to inclement weather on April 1, Salem Speedway is set to open its 2012 season on Sunday afternoon with the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut Express Short-Track Festival.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Pure Stocks and Portland Recycling Front Wheel Drive Stocks are set to share the quarter-mile infield oval for a full slate of racing action.

Mike Kestler of Louisville, the defending O’Reilly Auto Parts Pure Stock champion, is itching to get started racing.  He said the Salem Speedway short-track seemed to improve from the first year to the second and he hopes that trend continues.

“We were a little faster on our lap times last year and we hope that’s a result of the track becoming more seasoned,” said Kestler.

Kestler and Travis Rogers of Jeffersonville, who battled tooth and nail throughout the 2011 season, are set to resume the short-track battle on Sunday.  Rogers matched Kestler’s three feature wins in 2011, but fell 12 points shy of the champion in the final season standings.

Bill Grant of Clarksville and Matt Schindler of Charlestown are also expected to take up where they left off in 2011.  Grant and Schindler tied for the top spot in the Portland Recycling Front Wheel Drive division.  The tie-break went to Grant, whose three feature wins were one better than Schindler’s two, thus giving him the title.

According to track management a host of new teams are expected to join the Salem Speedway short-track veterans when the chase for the 2012 championships get underway on Sunday.

The FAST Series – Legend Cars, Bandoleros and Thunder Roadsters were originally scheduled as part of the season opening race, but are unable to return for the rescheduled event due to a Saturday night race commitment in Ohio.

Spectator gates open at 11 a.m. on Sunday, with practice at 11:15 a.m., qualifications at 12:45 and the first race rolling off at 1:30 p.m. (EDT).

Day of race tickets are priced at just $8 for adults and $3 for children (age 7-12) and may be purchased on-line by visiting www.salemspeedway.com or calling 812-883-6504 or toll free 1-888-246-7223.
