Schedules for 2009-10 football set

SHEPHERDSVILLE - While there has already been a lot of discussion over Bullitt Central football’s move from Class 6-A to Class 5-A starting in the fall of 2009, less has been said about all three local teams making major changes to their schedules.

That was made possible since almost all football decisions come on two- or four-year rotations. That allows schedules to be worked out in two-year blocks on a home-and-home basis.

So, 2009 starts a new two-year rotation. That is what allowed Bullitt Central’s move down one class.

The KHSAA made only minor changes to the football alignment after the major changes two years ago that pushed the state from four classes to six classes. It is possible that the governing board will make more extensive changes in another year that will take affect with the 2011 season. Local coaches and athletic director’s are already thinking that all three Bullitt County teams could be in the same class and the same district when those changes are made.

Despite the fact that Bullitt East and North Bullitt had no changes in their district alignment, both schools opted to make major changes to the non-district slate of games.

First off, both schools moved away from playing teams in the opposite Class 4-A district, meaning that they dropped games with Breckinridge County and Fairdale. Those are teams that East and North could be facing in the first round of the play-offs.

In addition, the KHSAA changed the scheduling grid for district games. Instead of playing district games every other week in the middle of the season, the district games are all late in the season, weeks seven through nine for those teams in a four-team district. Bullitt Central, in a five-team district, will play four games over five weeks against district rivals.

On major change that the KHSAA also made was in shortening the season by one week. Generally, that meant dropping the ‘open’ date that every team had last season. There was an ‘out’ given for teams to play on week ‘zero’ and then having an open date during the season. The only negative is that those teams playing before Aug. 28 have to give up a scrimmage.

Bullitt East took advantage of that situation and will open in a ‘Bowl’ game situation on Saturday, Aug. 22 when they will play Lexington Dunbar. The game will be played at North Hardin along with other games that day.

The Chargers will then have an open date on Oct. 2. During the scheduling process, Bullitt East head coach Doug Preston mentioned that he really liked an ‘open’ date for his team to get a week off during the season. In addition, the Chargers only scrimmaged once last season and it certainly didn’t seem to bother them.

Still, Bullitt East will be playing four Class 6-A teams and another team in Class 5-A. It will be a formidable schedule for the defending Class 4-A State Runners-up.

North Bullitt kept South Oldham, Waggener and Bullitt Central as non-district foes and also picked up Christian Academy. The longer out-of-town trip will be to the Lexington area each of the next two seasons, once to Woodford County and then to Lexington Tates Creek.

Bullitt Central kept non-district games with North Bullitt and Anderson County and kept Southern as an opponent despite losing them as a district rival. Bullitt Central and Waggener have played in the past and the new foes will be Barren County and Atherton.
